Installation Overview
Updated April 01, 2026
This guide explains the typical workflow for installing Molding Studio interior and exterior moldings made with an EPS foam core and a protective coating system.
- Interior moldings: EPS foam core with a lightweight polymer-modified plaster coating.
- Exterior moldings: precision-cut EPS foam core with a durable, flexible polymer-cement coating designed for strength, crack resistance, and weather resistance.
Important: Execution of installation must conform to the EIFS manufacturer’s requirements for environmental conditions, application, materials, and preparation—plus any project drawings/specifications. If project specs differ from this guide, follow the project specs.
What this guide covers
This installation series is broken into separate posts so you can follow the part you need:
- Environmental conditions & storage
- Surface preparation
- Measuring, layout & dry fit
- Cutting & fitting
- Adhesives & attachment
- Seams, joints & caulking
- Priming, painting & maintenance
Before you begin (quick checklist)
Tools you’ll typically need
- Tape measure + pencil/marker
- Level (2–4 ft) or laser level
- Chalk line (for long runs)
- Miter saw with a fine-tooth blade (or hand saw/miter box)
- Sanding block or fine sandpaper
- Utility knife (for light trimming)
- Caulk gun
- Putty knife / trowel (for adhesive and joint work)
- Temporary supports (painter’s tape, clamps, bracing as needed)
- PPE: eye protection, gloves, dust mask/respirator
Materials (confirm per project specs)
- Manufacturer-specified EIFS-compatible adhesive/basecoat
- Joint/patch material (as specified)
- Mesh tape (if specified for seams)
- Sealant/caulk (exterior transitions typically need a high-quality exterior sealant)
- Primer + finish coats (as specified for the system)
Foam safety note: Avoid solvent-based adhesives or cleaners that can attack foam. Always use products compatible with EPS and per EIFS requirements.
The typical installation flow
- Confirm conditions (temperature, substrate, weather) and stage materials.
- Prepare surfaces so they’re sound, clean, and ready for bonding.
- Measure and plan your runs, joints, corners, and reveals.
- Cut and dry-fit pieces before applying adhesive.
- Bond/attach moldings per the specified adhesive method; brace as needed.
- Treat seams and transitions (fill, reinforce, and seal where required).
- Prime and finish with the specified coating system after proper cure.
